The subject of hosting involves many alternative aspects; trustworthiness, shopper support, pricing, add-on features, programming, and acceptable installation of PHP and other favored promoting scripts.
Today, I am going to target subject, traffic, and the effects it has on your web site's hosting. The straightforward one word answer here is 'Bandwith '.
Obviously, Bandwith is the measurement of info, and the velocity at which it flows thru the telephone lines, wire or DSL lines to transfer info to and from an internet site through your personal computer.
your internet site hosting, Bandwith measures this flow of information transfer, otherwise called 'Traffic '. In simple English, it's the quantity of hits you receive to your internet site; pure volume multiplied by the file sizes included on your pages.
Therefore if you've got an all text based site, you would be in a position to receive more traffic, at lower bandwith numbers, than you would if you have a 'graphics ' thorough page, which would naturally have higher file sizes which are being transferred from your website to your visitor's browser.
That's great Ginger, but how can this effect my hosting?
Well, that relies on your host, and the package you join up to. For instance, most hosting services set a limit on the quantity of bandwith they include with your charge per month. Relying on the character of your website, (graphics comprehensive vs. Lower file sized pages), you will be able to forecast how much bandwith you will need.
Example; my design site is definately what most would consider a *graphics intensive* internet site! I will tell you that the majority of my pages there are more than the commended file size of 24kbs. From my numbers logs, I will see that I receive more than 150,000 hits to my site before I reach a total bandwith of 2GBs, which is generally the maximum limit you will find on lower scaled hosting packages.
If you know, or forecast that you may see more hits than that in any particular month, you might need to consider purchasing a hosting package that gives a higher maximum of bandwith authorized each month.
Hosting firms that restrict your bandwith, charge a further charge whey you surpass your boundaries. The average extra cost I've found through my research is roughly $3USD per GB...
FYI= one GB = 1,000 MB one MB = one thousand KB
Therefore if you have got a bandwith, (aka 'data transfer’), limit of 2GB that would equal roughly an identical quantity of info you can store on three CD's.
If you are building your first website, and haven't a clue how much traffic you'll generate out of the gate, I would like to recommend beginning with a basic website hosting package. As your internet site grows in renown and your traffic increases, you can always talk to your host about upgrading to a package with higher bandwith boundaries.
From my experience, new internet sites often take about 3-6 months of solid promotion before bandwith becomes a problem. Do not forget to employ a host that provides detailed stats reports, and monitor your internet site activity continually. Watch for trends, and base your judgements on your results. |
