Basic Information on Web Layout

When you make a site design, one of the more overlooked facets of the design is the layout. Now, many individuals think about the way to do a layout (CSS, tables, frames, and so on.), but the fundamentals of Web layout are usually totally ignored.

Space and Whitespace
Use the entire space, but do not be categorical in your use. To paraphrase, use comparatively sized layout sections on your internet pages, in order that they expand and contract to fit the browser window.

Keep screen resolution under consideration. While the bulk of PC users have moved away from 640x480 resolution, keep that under consideration when you are planning. Having shoppers leave because all they are able to see is an emblem on their monitor isn't good buyer service.

Use color to define spaces
If you need to have a page that could be a precise width, why not center it on the browser screen and make the background color of the page a different color? This'll help the page seem to resize for different browsers; bigger browsers will simply have more background color showing, while smaller browsers will have less or none showing.

Pictures and Graphics
Align your photographs. One of the commonest beginner layout mistakes is to smack pictures into a page willy-nilly without thought to layout.
If you use an img tag and then write text to follow it, you may have the image and then one line of text to the right of it. Using the align attribute will help make your images part of the layout.

Balance the graphics and text on a page. It is easy to get carried away with a lot of photographs and animations, but they can make a page awfully tough to read. When you are considering your layout, remember that pictures are a serious part of the design, not just afterthoughts.

Text Width
Think about text width. This is frequently called the "scan length", and refers to how many words are shown on one line. Most of the people can easily read about seven to eleven words on a line. Longer than that, and the text is tough to read, shorter than that and it's disjointed and distracting. When planning your layouts ensure that the major text area exhibits the text in a meaningful width.

Centering text is inadvisable. One of the first layout systems a new designer learns is the center tag, and they center everything on their pages. However, centering is extremely tricky to do well and it's often hard to read.
